Horsham and District Riding Club is affiliated to the British Horse Society. It has a junior membership for those aged 14-16 and senior members are 17 & over. There is non-riding membership as well. Non-riders are welcome for people who like to be with horses, meet people and help at events as well as attend all the lectures/demos and unmounted activities.
All our members receive News Letters throughout the year which include our programme of events and training dates, along with Club News and event Reports/Results.
The Club is for riders of all levels, from those at a very novice level to those who compete at National Championships and top events like Badminton. We are keen to encourage those who are just starting out or have novice horses. Training is organised for levels in all disciplines, eg. Dressage, Show Jumping, Gridwork, and Cross Country. Most are group lessons which is a good introduction for young horses.
There is a regular system of Riding Club examination training from the most basic leading to the professional B.H.S. Exams. Syllabi are available and members may attend the stable management sessions without taking the Riding Club tests. Members passing levels I, II and III are allowed direct entry into B.H.S. Stage III.
We hold many competitions, for example 4 indoor winter Dressage Competitions, 3 or 4 Summer Dressage afternoons/evenings including Combined Training, Dressage to Music and a Dressage Derby. At Christmas time, a Dressage to music in Costume competition takes place. Hunter Trials and a One Day Event are organised each year. There are also show jumping competitions, indoor and outdoor, throughout the year.
The Open Annual Horse show, a prestigious and reputed event in the equestrian calendar takes place in July and has approximately 50 classes of showing, show jumping and dressage.
We are a very sociable Club and enjoy organised beach rides, other social rides, lectures/demonstrations, visits, trips, quiz nights, summer BBQs, and winter suppers and entertainment.
Each year in November, we hold our Annual General Meeting, and we encourage all members to attend. It is an excellent opportunity for members to hear all about the Club's activities and put forward ideas for future events. Trophies and awards are presented to members who have been successful throughout the year, and we also present thank-you awards to all our volunteers and helpers. After the meeting we have supper and it is a good opportunity for us all to catch up and chat.
Our venues include: Belmoredean and Horsham Rugby Club for Dressage; Sands Farm for Show Jumping, Dressage and Training; Coombelands for Hunter Trials and One Day Events; Eastlands for Training and Hunter Trials. Other venues are used for Cross Country Training, including Tweseldown, Stilemans, Ardingly, Borde Hill, Eastlands and Coombelands. We are also always on the look out for new venues.
We try and keep the whole atmosphere of the Club very friendly with the aim for everything to be fun and enjoyable as well as increasing knowledge and abilities to benefit our horses.
